01 - Blue - The X Collab

The X Collab is a platform created by Brandon Coyle (KSA) and Andrel Damian (KSA) in collaboration with Josh Wijsveld (UCA) and Darragh Morgan (Brighton University). The platform was established as a catalyst to create inter-institutional multidisciplinary collaborations. Their goal from the beginning was to bring creative students from universities all over the United Kingdom in effort to create artwork in the current uninspiring climate. Their vision is to provide exposure, opportunity for networking and a means of approaching the market of artwork in an alternative manner.

The Theme of their first project is BLUE. Carefully selected for it is a symbol of inspiration and represents wisdom, reliability and serenity. The project randomly assigned me to a partner to dissolve barriers and hopefully make a life-long friend. In stages we are to communicate between the two of us during the first week, meanwhile, creating our pieces that reflect the theme. The second stage is to swap ideas and pieces, reflect and communicate about our ideas. once we have swapped we have to reimagine our works into a new outcome.

{ submissions had to be max quality, in JPEG, PNG or MP4; max 59 seconds. Digital work must be A4 portrait or 210mm by 297mm. must be 300dpi. }

I got to collab with a lovely lady, Julia Williams who runs WONDERHAUS. She produces amazing pieces of jewellery which is something I am interested in working on myself in the future for the ETSY store. She created a lovely acrylic eletric blue necklace (seen in the picture below).

I had created a digital painting using procreate and image references from PEXEL. I layered different textures in a variety of blues with line work of other figures, the main focus in the semi silhouette of the women (as seen below).

first concept

When rethinking the artwork i straight away used the image to make a ring around the figure but found it looked too similar to my origanal concept. as i enjoy over-layering also of my work, used this again by using the whole image to break up some of the blue background allowing some of the painted textures added to come threw more.

The concepts of The X Collabs project was amazing to be apart off. This was a good time to create something new and get into the swing of drawing again as I feel I lost a-lot of creative art-flow due to graduating just before the pandemic started. I enjoyed the collab so much I have signed up to be notified when their next project starts.
