Final Major Project Proposal

My initial idea is looking into both the book publishing industry and improving my knowledge of it while also working on a project that I will be creating a series of illustrations or book as a final outcome.

I will be exploring a variety of illustrators and artist that both I enjoy as well as these who can influence my work. I want to experiment with watercolours and develop into working with digital media as well. One idea is to illustrate to short stories or my favourite stories to develop that skill as part of the industry part of the project. I also wish to work on some live briefs to kick start the project and get used working to a client brief.

My initial artists I wish to look at to influence my work are illustrators such as Oliver Jeffers, Evie Alum and Amy Fisher. I am unsure on what target audience my work is targeted towards however, I feel the audience may be heading towards fiction or children areas of the book industry however I am open to any category and open to any audience for it all depends how my work develops as I’m unsure of the content and context of the project will be.

I wish to explore the artists methodology and their context to their work in order to understand them and their work better so it can influence my work easier. I will most likely create pastiches to understand the work more and develop from there.

I will also want to develop my skills by following Skillshare videos as well as using skills I’ve developed throughout the time of the course.

A few ideas I have to what context I wish to follow for the project may be linked into folktales or fairy tales or either Greek mythology however I feel this is a very common and generic idea and has been done before. A second idea is to develop my own story or a book around the different movements in the art industry for children. However, after some research this idea has also be done. A final idea would be looking into the renaissance era in some way.

After some time, mind mapping and talks with tutors I have thought of a finalised idea for this project. I think I’ll focus on the book industry in my own time however I will keep the live briefs I’ve completed already in the project; this is because I want to fully focus on the main project. My main project I will be focusing on the renaissance however after looking into some elements of the era so far, I wish to focus on pandemics as we are now working though our own with Coronavirus. I wish to look at how artists responded to the pandemic as well as past pandemics like the plague and Spanish flu and tuberculosis. I then hope to develop this research into making a series of illustrations of how I’ve responded to the pandemic with my own work.
